Storm Trysail Foundation Dinner A Success!

April 13, 2017

Funds to be used for Junior Safety-At-Sea programs and other initiatives.

The Storm Trysail Foundation held its annual fundraising dinner April 13th at the Beach Point Club in Mamaroneck, NY. Over 90 people attended the event, which included silent auctions and a live auction to cap off the night. The evening was hosted by Gary Jobson, who presided over the awarding of the Storm Trysail Foundation “Seamanship Award” and the ‘Sailing Legacy Award”.

The “Seamanship Award” was given to Storm Trysail Club member Rich Wilson - the youngest winning Skipper of the Newport Bermuda Race (in 1980), and 2-time competitor in the Vendée Globe Race (solo, non-stop, around the world). In 2017, he became the oldest competitor ever to complete the race. He has also set multiple double-handed long distance records, and recorded a 2nd in the 2004 Transatlantic Race.

2018 Dinner 1

Do these names ring a bell?!  Emcee Gary Jobson, Storm Trysail Foundation President John Fisher, Honoree Rich Wilson and Commodore Lenny Sitar pose with the impressive “Seamanship Award” trophy.  The trophy is unique in that it always includes the full list of crewmembers (much like the Stanley Cup in hockey), with as many as 20+ names on the largest of yachts.  In Rich’s case, as a solo sailor, it doesn’t make a difference.  His name will - literally - stand alone besides the many previous winners such as member Ted Turner and the Tenacious crew, member (deceased) George Coumantaros and Boomerang crew, and member George David and the Rambler 100 crew.

The Storm Trysail Foundation’s “Sailing Legacy Award” was awarded to a group of 10 women deserving of recognition for their efforts in Race Management and Organization. The winners were: Kendra Brennan, Susie Hall, Penny Langone, Jane Mansfield, Dottie Myles, Barbara Neville, Ellyn Osmond, Mary Savage, Leggie Torrey and Marcy Trenholm.Musto, the official apparel provider to the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race, donated two seats for the VO65 Pro-Am Race in Newport, RI on May 17th as live auction items. Member Steve Benjamin provided the auction with a 3-4 day (long weekend) luxury home vacation in either Jamestown, RI, or Minnesott Beach, NC. Other auction items were donated by Mt Gay Rum, Regatta Ginger beer, Soundview Millworks , Gifted of Larchmont, North Sails, MW Coastal Goods, Lemon and Lines, Team One Newport, Alex Baba-Vulic photography, Craft Beer New York,  Landfall Navigation, Sailor Bags, Trident Studio’s, Tom Graves, and Wooden Burgee.

2018 Dinner 3

Over 90 guests attended the dinner the Beach Point Club, enjoying the delicious  food, fine wine and drink, and each other’s camaraderie.

“I would like the thank all of the members and volunteers who worked so hard to make the evening a success, especially Mark Ellman who sponsored us with the Beach Point Club.  In addition, we would like to express our appreciation for the companies and individuals who support the Foundation through their generous donations of items and experiences for the auctions. And, last but certainly not least, we are grateful to all of those who attended the evening and who participated in the online and in-person auctions. The Storm Trysail Foundation supports educational initiatives and Safety-At-Sea programs."
